Fashion Week in New York City is unlike any other, especially since it’s where it all began. In 1943 when fashion buyers and workers weren’t able to go to fashion viewings in Paris during WWII, they moved across the Atlantic to showcase their work instead. And so Fashion Week was born as we know it today.
What makes NYFW so special is that it is littered with all the newest and upcoming trends (avant-garde or ready to wear), halls full of celebrities and influencers, as well as all the renowned designers, and runways set in the coolest locations — shows taking place in a grand building near the Brooklyn Bridge or an exclusive rooftop in Chelsea, views overlooking downtown’s Financial District, the skyline glistening as the perfect backdrop for such events. This week in New York is one of the few weeks out of the year where everyone who is anyone comes together to celebrate one thing: self-expression through fashion. Whether you’re gearing up weeks in advanced to choose what to wear or just picking up something last minute from your local thrift shop or want to make a political statement about the industry with your own designs, anything goes when you’re attending.
There’s something about this time of the year that gives you the confidence to go out and try new styles or be your true self without any judgment. The trends this season varied from mini-triangle cat eye glasses, lots of bold saturated colors, luxurious checkered and plaid coats, sequins and metallics, adventurous mixed prints, eye-catching statement earrings, really ugly sneakers that actually made you question their ugliness, denim on denim on denim, trouser suits, belt bags, the list goes on.
I had an amazing experience this year, having met tons of great, passionate people and most importantly, having been able to experience art in another medium, outside of my usual realm within fashion photography.
Here are some photos of the best favorite street style, fashion presentations, and walks from this year’s Fashion Week in the city that never sleeps. Photos are all my personal works. Enjoy!
